Music at 6

By Carter Burwell; illustrations by Scott Menchin

Film composer Carter Burwell (Fargo, Adaptation) considers here the particularly American phenomenon of mixing music and news, from WW1 newsreel accompaniment to the scoring of the 2003 Gulf War coverage (informed by Burwell’s revealing interviews with the composers of all three networks’ news music).

Carter Burwell composed his first film score for the Coen brothers’ Blood Simple; he has since provided music for all of their films, as well as over 50 others, including Being John Malkovich, The Kids Are Alright, Twilight, Velvet Goldmine, Gods and Monsters, Michael Almereyda’s Hamlet, Before Night Falls, and Adaptation. He also composes for dance and theatre. He lives in New York City.

Scott Menchin has created illustrations for Dr. Pepper, Intel, Sun Microsystems, Toyota, Time, Newsweek, Esquire, Wired, GQ, Saveur, Fast Company, Smart Money, Rolling Stone, The New York Times and The Washington Post. His work has appeared in American Illustration, Print Magazine, The Society of Illustrators, and The Society of Publication Designers. In 1999 his award-winning children’s book, Man Gave Names to All the Animals, with text by Bob Dylan, was published. Menchin has also served as art director of How magazine and Seven Days. He teaches at New York City’s Pratt Institute Graduate School.
