“ESOPUS 14: PROJECTS” AT ESOPUS SPACE

April 9, 2010

Esopus Space is pleased to present “ESOPUS 14: PROJECTS,” a group exhibition related to the spring 2010 issue of the award-winning arts publication Esopus, slated to arrive in bookstores the first week of May.

For the issue, Esopus commissioned long-form projects from 12 artists: Erica Allen, John Baldessari, Suzanne Bocanegra, Jared Flood, Marcia Kure, Kerry James Marshall, Juri Morioka, John O’Connor, Roxy Paine, Judy Pfaff, Barbara Probst, and Fernando Santangelo. Each of these artists has contributed work to the exhibition, which will be on view at Esopus Space through May 27th.

The majority of the exhibited work relates directly to artists’ contributions for Esopus 14. Roxy Paine is showing one of 16 drawings of dendritic forms that appear in the issue (one is reproduced as a removable 25" x 38" pull-out poster), and Judy Pfaff has contributed an original photocollage that takes the form of an eight-panel foldout in the magazine. Knitting designer and photographer Jared Flood will exhibit the “Exquisite Corpse” garment he and five other designers created over the course of three months for the magazine, and John Baldessari shows the six images from his new “Foot and Stocking Series” created as removable inserts for Esopus readers. Other artists, such as Suzanne Bocanegra (whose “Recipe Card Library” project in the issue features poem-recipes she commissioned from 31 different writers) and Barbara Probst (whose Exposure #56 project graces 16 pages in the issue), are contributing different work: Bocanegra will be showing a single-channel video related to the performance piece “I Write the Songs,” while Probst will be represented by her Exposure #70 photographic diptych.

An opening reception for the exhibition will take place on Thursday, April 29th, from 7 to 9 pm. The event is free and open to the public, and also serves as a launch party for the issue, which will be available for sale at the event.
