The Earlies are a half-American, half-English band formed by John-Mark Lapham, Brandon Carr, Giles Hatton, and Christian Madden in 2004. The group, which collaborates with a revolving roster of musicians both here and in the U.K., released These Were the Earlies on Secretly Canadian Records in 2005.
Poet James Merrill’s productive use of a Ouija board for his work, discussed in Mitch Horowitz's “Spellbound” (also in this issue), got us to wondering: What kind of illumination—spiritual or otherwise—might musicians gain from a “talking board” Early in the summer Esopus sent Ouija boards to 13 participants, requesting that they use them in some way to create songs.
