John Fell Ryan and Dan Hougland started Excepter in 2002. The group’s debut album, KA, appeared on Fusetron in 2003; their second LP, Alternation, was released by 5RC in 2005. Ryan and Hougland were later joined by Nathan Corbin and Jon Nicholson; their first project as a four-piece was the EP Sunbomber.
Poet James Merrill’s productive use of a Ouija board for his work, discussed in Mitch Horowitz's “Spellbound” (also in this issue), got us to wondering: What kind of illumination—spiritual or otherwise—might musicians gain from a “talking board” Early in the summer Esopus sent Ouija boards to 13 participants, requesting that they use them in some way to create songs.
