ESOPUS SPACE

Installation shot of Bryan Nash Gill's "What Was Will Be Again," the final exhibition at Esopus Space in May 2012.

Esopus Space, an exhibition and performance venue run by the Esopus Foundation Ltd., was in operation from June 2009 to June 2012. Located in the heart of Greenwich Village, this intimately scaled space embarked on an ambitious programming series that included concerts, recitals, readings, artists’ presentations, screenings, lectures, and exhibitions featuring both well-known and emerging voices working in virtually every creative discipline.

What made Esopus Space particularly unique was the opportunities it provided both artists and audience for an authentic, completely unmediated exchange. The space seated just 60 people, and events were meant to feel less like formal presentations than dynamic exchanges between performer and audience. Reflecting the mission of the Esopus Foundation and Esopus, the space provided an accessible, noncommercial arena in which creative people and the public were able to connect in meaningful, productive ways. The 18 exhibitions that were mounted in Esopus Space featured work from Esopus contributors as well as from emerging and established figures in the contemporary art world in New York City and beyond. For detailed descriptions and images from all of the exhibitions presented at the space, please visit the Esopus Space Exhibitions and Events archives.

Esopus Space was funded in part by a capacity-building grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
