Artist’s Project: William Christenberry

By William Christenberry

Perhaps best-known as one of the pioneers of ’70s fine-art color photography, William Christenberry is also an acclaimed painter, installation artist, and sculptor. For this project, Christenberry revisited a structure from his native Hale County, Alabama—first photographed in 1971—and crafted Ghost Form, 2004: quite possibly, the first magazine sculpture.

William Christenberry lives in Washington, D.C., where he teaches at the Corcoran School of Art. His photographs, sculptures, drawings, and paintings have been widely exhibited and collected for the past four decades and are the subject of numerous publications, including William Christenberry: Southern Photographs (Aperture, 1983). Christenberry, the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation, shows at the Pace/ MacGill Gallery in New York.
